Don’t be scared of WordPress

I hear this a lot of my clients. They’re scared of WordPress. There are so many plugins and themes and buttons. They don’t want to mess anything up. So let me make some of WordPress a bit less scary for you.

Themes

These are your design parts. This is what your website can look like. It won’t be exactly like the demo theme they show you, but you can make it something similar. Always check out the demo link of a theme before you install it. Every theme is built differently so there is no way general way to say how to set up your theme. However, every theme has its own templates, options, and customize screen so those are the first places to look when setting up your theme. You can also check the theme website for a tutorial on how to set up the theme.

Plugins

This is your function part of the website. There are plugins for design as well, but to make things simple, these are the parts that make your website do what you want it to do. If you want it to be a podcast, there’s a plugin for that. If you want it to be an online shop, there’s a plugin for that. If you want it to be a members area, again, there’s a plugin for that. You will need to shop around a bit and find the right plugin. There are hundreds of plugins that do the same thing so you want to make sure you find the one that works for you.

Installing WordPress

This can get a bit complicated. The easiest way to do this is to buy your domain and hosting package from the same place. Then you should have a button to install WordPress. There are plenty of videos online that can show you how to do this as well.

WordPress is a great platform because it really is one of the easier backend areas to use that gives the most functionality. There are easier to use platforms but they will limit you a bit in what you can do with your website.
