But wait, have you even heard of SEO already? I may just be blabbing on and on here about something you’re not familiar yet. If you don’t know what this online marketing technique is (which is surprising to me, really), allow me to introduce it to you very briefly.
What Is SEO?
I’m sure you use Google – Yahoo, Bing, and Yandex too, even. These websites are what we refer to as search engines. We generally come to them when we have a question or inquiry that needs immediate answers such as “Is the world round?” or “Is there a shoe shop near me?” We live in an age wherein people look to the internet to help them even with the simplest matters. Search engines, specifically, address people’s need to know.
So, what does SEO have to do with any of this?
Well, search engines are a huge part of what we are talking about today. In fact, SEO is an acronym that stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s basically a marketing methodology that revolves around databases like Google – especially Google.
Everyday, people make a million – no, a billion searches (see reference). And what SEO aims to do is to make your online office – your e-commerce website – a part of the results for those searches. Even if you just make it to the front page for 0.001% of those searches, it would already mean a lot for your business. And I do mean a lot as in an astronomically greater chance of landing sales and conversions. Many statistical researches can attest to that.
What Does SEO Involve?
Well, it involves many things. Search Engine Optimization is not a simple marketing method to administer. In fact, it’s a method that involves many other methods. You can say that the word “SEO” is an umbrella term for a combination of marketing techniques that purport to meet the same objective – to help you rank higher in search engines.
These methods primarily include:
1. Keyword Optimization
2. Content Marketing
3. Niche Link Building
4. Citation Building
5. Social Media Marketing
6. Guest Posting
… and many, many others.
There is a lot of work involved in SEO so can never expect the magic to happen overnight. That’s probably the only drawback of SEO – but not one too difficult to deal with. It’s a long term strategy that needs to be developed intently. It doesn’t matter whether you’re doing Boston SEO or something else; it’s still going to take a while. But because it is long term, you can also expect the merits to last longer compared to conventional marketing techniques.
Say, paper marketing for example (e.g. flyers, pamphlets, brochures, etc.). These marketing tools may seem “cheaper” but they’re actually more expensive in the long run. Why is this so? First of all, the scope of this method is quite limited. The only people you’d be able to reach are within the immediate area of your business. Second of all, it’s wasteful. If you give away 100 flyers, for example, you should expect that at least 20% of the people who received your flyer will throw it away without giving it due attention. So that’s 20% of wasted print. Lastly, the hype that paper marketing brings doesn’t last long. You blink and it’s over so you would have to do everything all over again.
SEO may take time but when it starts to take off, it takes off high. It also holds its flight steady with little maintenance. So between conventional methods and SEO, you should know which the better route is.
