Hi I’m Stephanie the Techy Girl and welcome to the techy girl podcast brought to you by EGM. Each month we will be tackling a new area of digital marketing and explaining all the ins and outs in normal people language for you. But to get started let’s jump right on in to this whole digital marketing thing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been contacted by clients wanting help with their website or setting up their funnels or the infamous SEO. And as soon as I ask them about their digital marketing plan…..silence…..blank stares….their what!?!?!?! They’ve got some kind of a business plan sure. But most of my clients run their business from their homes and maybe they’re even just starting out. Or they’ve got a business going but they want to expand it a bit. They know they NEED a Facebook page or a website but they don’t actually realize all of this is part of the wonderful world of digital marketing.
Ok. Let’s define it – Digital marketing is an umbrella term for the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium. – thank you Wikipedia….I’m not at the university….i can use them as a source now. Let’s pick this a part a bit shall we.
Umbrella term – basically means it’s a general term like saying homemade pumpkin pie is just food.
Marketing – That’s literally an entire division of most major companies. There are literally 100’s of people that make up a marketing a team in a fortune 500 company. According to a 2014 Gartner Research study, “companies spent on average 10.2% of their annual 2014 revenue on overall marketing, with 50% of companies planning to increase [in 2015] to an average of 10.4%.” Microsoft spent $51 billion (yes I checked it twice….billion) on marketing in 2014. I’ve put a link to my source there in the description for you non believers.
Digital technologies – apparently you can now run your home from your smartphone so what exactly is digital technologies???
mainly on the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium – oh the internet….that little thing….the thing that holds all the files and scripts of prettttty much everything now.
Ok let’s start making this normal people language. Digital marketing is any kind of marketing you do online. This can be mobile apps, email campaigns, social media campaigns, advertising online, online networks and forums.
In the old days when I was a child (I’m not that old but let’s just say I didn’t have Google as a resource to write my papers in High School.) you had actual stores. We still have those by the way but back then we ONLY had them. There was no amazon prime to send you a doggy carrier in 24 hours.
With those store, before digital marketing, there was a different system. Mailers were sent out. Ads were placed in magazines and newspapers. And yes we still have these today. The difference is, now they are becoming the minority. Marketing companies are focused on their websites and responding to customer complaints on twitter and what hashtag they’re going to use on Instagram. That is why today your website is just as important as your actual store.
In fact, you really should be thinking of them as one and the same. If you business is all online, they really and truly are one and the same.
Ok, now that we understand what the heck digital marketing is, let’s take a deeper look into that so called umbrella.
