What do you need to know before you start your website? So many things! But let’s make this easy for you. The primary things you need before you create your website are your website’s main purpose, a branding board and images, and your content. Check out this video where I walk you through how to set this up for your website.
Choosing your website’s purpose
If you have followed me before or taken my Ultimate Website Bundle, you will know that I insist that your website has 1 purpose. Yes, that’s right. One single purpose! Now you might be saying that’s impossible. I have so many wonderful things to offer. And that’s true. But just like you would ask someone to marry you on a first date, you would ask a brand new visitor to your website to invest thousands of dollars. So make it simple. Make it easy. And make it obvious. Let them know all over your website what it is that they need to be doing. If you are asking them to do five different things, they are going to get confused. Keep it simple. Pick a single purpose for your website and then move on from there.
Creating your branding board and images
I will confess. This beautiful website you see before you. Well, it took me years to get really clear on my brand and my images. Literally years. One regret I have is not working with a brand specialist years before. My brand is me. All these colors and images you see before you are things you will even see in my home. This is how I present myself and so it is how I present my website. If you want to get to know me, come check out my website. You’ll get a pretty good idea of who I am and what I am all about. But that is because I took the time to really get clear about my brand. I picked the colors, images, and fonts. I created a branding board to make things easy. If you are hiring someone to help you with your website, this is probably the best gift you can give them. From my experience, those clients who come to me with a branding board all ready are 10 times happier with their websites than those who do not. Why? Because they know who and what they are all about and it is easy to translate into a website design.
Creating your website content
There is a love-hate when it comes to content. People don’t really read your website. They skim. But yet, you have to take the time to work on your content. I spent hours preparing the content on my website, the content I put out on social media, even this content you are reading right now. It didn’t happen by accident. In fact, I created it all for someone who will skim through my content. I used specific words that I use all the time so it is in my natural voice. It is set up with headings and links and shorter paragraphs to make it easy for someone to skim through and still get the really important parts. In short, writing content for your website is not the same as writing content for a newspaper article or a college essay. If you need help with your content, check out this amazing free resource.
