Whenever I start a big project, I make a list. It’s usually a very long and detailed list. With lots of to-dos and due dates. And as soon as that list is done, the panic sets in. How am I ever going to do this all and where do I start. Well, when it comes to your website, there’s an easy place to start. Hosting.
What is hosting?
(*Hosting – where your website files are stored. Files make up your website). See this beautiful website? I know. It’s gorgeous. Well, if you want to have some fun check out the developer tools and you’ll see what this site really looks like. It’s a bunch of links and code and files. The truth is your website looks more like a dropbox folder on your harddrive then it does all these beautiful images and fonts you see before you. So your hosting is where you store all the files for your website. And
Whatever company you choose, I recommend getting something with unlimited space. Again, to keep things simple, if you bought your domain name from Bluehost, get your hosting from them as well. They have a decent mid-sized package which is perfect for a start-up. Once again, you can ignore all the addons to keep things simple. There is nothing required but the domain name and hosting.
If you have another hosting service or didn’t buy your hosting and your domain name from the same company, you will need to switch your name servers
(Namesevers: the numerical web address where your domain name points to – this is what tells the domain name to look at your hosting service for the files for your website).
If this is required, I highly recommend you speak with or chat with your hosting provider to get the correct address and they will walk you through how to
do that.
Why don’t you need hosting with Squarespace or Wix?
With Squarespace and Wix, you pay a monthly fee directly to them. What is included in this monthly fee is essentially your hosting. It’s a fee to store the files that make up your website and some of the extra bells and whistle. The only thing is you will have less control of your website.
Which hosting company should you use?
There are generally 3 different hosting companies you will hear a lot about.
In this video, I’ll show you all three of them and help you choose the right hosting company for your website.
